THE LAB · SANKOFA FORWARD
Generative Practice
Ancestral patterns extended through new instruments. The maison's speculative register.
All works in this program are generated with AI tools. Each tile labeled AI-GENERATED · 2026.
Sankofa Forward is DAP LUXE Cultural Futures Lab's generative practice program. The maison's thesis is Sankofa, the Akan principle of moving forward while retrieving ancestral patterns. Sankofa Forward applies that thesis through generative tools: each work begins with the maison's existing visual vocabulary (the tapestry method, the Royalty Collection, the African royal textile lineages documented in the Blyden Blueprint) and uses AI as an instrument to project that vocabulary into speculative territory.
The practice is explicit about its method. Every work in this program is AI-generated. Each tile carries an AI-GENERATED · 2026 label. The maison treats authorship transparently, the way printed publications credit contributors, the way ateliers credit material sources, the way museums credit acquisition provenance.
Sankofa Forward does not replace the maison's human-anchored work. The Royalty Collection remains the maison's flagship work, made at the atelier and worn by real bodies. Grounding Together remains the gathering series, documented by BashLNCS photography. Ancestral Futurism in Practice remains the exhibition program. Sankofa Forward extends the vocabulary into speculative territory that human photography cannot reach: garments that do not yet exist, futures that have not yet happened, dimensions the maison is moving toward.
The Lab opens this program as a deliberate position. A Black-owned cultural fashion house with a research practice rooted in African linguistic heritage engages with generative tools in 2026 the same way it engages with every other inherited tool, by documenting its origin, tracing its colonial export, and stewarding its contemporary use. The Working Definitions IV essay, On Generative Practice, files the full position.
"Sankofa forward, not Sankofa nostalgic. The pattern is retrieved, the instrument is new."
